Thomas Named 2018 NABC High School Coach of Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo.  – One of the most acclaimed coaches in the history of Indiana high school basketball, Bloomington South High School head coach J.R. Holmes is the recipient of the 2021 Outstanding High School Coach Award presented by Wilson from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

With more than 850 wins in his long career and a winning percentage of more than 70 percent, Holmes has won the most games of any high school coach in Indiana.  His numbers would be great anywhere but to have the success in the Hoosier State, where basketball reigns, is remarkable.

Holmes has coached in more than 1200 games in his career, starting as a head coach in 1970 with two seasons at Tunnelton, 10 at Mitchell and 39 seasons at Bloomington South.  His teams have won numerous conference championships, regional and sectional titles as well as state 4A championships in 2009 and 2011. In 2009 he was named USA Today National Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.

Holmes will receive his award on Friday, April 2, during the virtual AT&T NABC Guardians of the Game Awards Show, which begins at 6:30 pm (EDT). The show will be streamed at https://watchstadium.com/.
