KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Following a season leading the Purdue Boilermakers to a share of the Big Ten Conference regular season title and reaching the NCAA Elite Eight, Matt Painter has been selected as the 2019 NABC Division I Coach of the Year, presented by Wilson.
Painter will receive his award on Sunday, April 7, at the annual AT&T NABC Guardians of the Game awards show in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Auditorium at the Minneapolis Convention Center during the NABC Convention and NCAA Men’s Final Four.

In his 14 seasons as head coach at Purdue, Painter took Big Ten Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time this season as the Boilers had a 16-4 conference won-lost record and a 26-10 overall record. His four honors rank third in Big Ten history behind Purdue’s Gene Keady (seven) and Indiana’s Bob Knight (five). Purdue has reached the NCAA tournament in 11 of the last 13 years and advanced to the Sweet 16 five times, including the last three seasons.
This season, Painter guided Purdue to its first NCAA Elite Eight since 2000. As a three-seed, the Boilers had an opening round win over Old Dominion and then dispatched defending NCAA champion Villanova and sixth-ranked Tennessee before being edged by second-ranked Virginia in overtime.
