NCAA Approves Division I Non-Coaching Staff Blanket Waiver

The NCAA Division I Council has approved a legislative relief blanket waiver permitting up to two noncoaching staff members with sport-specific responsibilities in men’s and women’s basketball to engage in instructional duties during required out-of-season activities and in-season practice activities during the 2021-22 playing season.

The waiver, which was jointly proposed by the NABC and WBCA and goes into effect on September 20, includes the following stipulations:
One or more of the head and/or assistant coaches are not in attendance for countable athletically related activities (e.g., practice);
The noncoaching staff position existed as of August 1, 2021;
The names of the designated noncoaching staff members selected to perform such duties must be kept on file in the athletics department; and
No more than four coaches and noncoaching staff members (six for the national service academies), combined, engage in providing instruction to student-athletes at any one time.
