KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After leading their respective teams to national titles in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Shakur Juiston of Hutchinson Community College (KS) and Todd Lorensen of Southwestern Community College (IA) have earned honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Juiston was named the NABC Coaches’ Player of the Year for the NJCAA and Lorensen is the NABC Coach of the Year for the NJCAA.
A 6-7 forward from Newark, N.J., Juiston led the Blue Dragons to the NJCAA Division I championship this season. The sophomore All-American averaged a double-double, scoring 17.3 points and grabbing 12.1 rebounds per game while shooting 60.9 percent from the field and averaging 3.9 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.8 blocked shots per game. He had highs of 88 points and 56 rebounds in this year’s NJCAA national tournament.
Lorensen, in just his third season at Southwestern, guided the Spartans to the first national championship in their history, winning the NJCAA Division II title in Danville, Ill. Southwestern outscored its opponents by an average margin of 15.7 points in the tourney, closed the season with 13 straight wins and a 36-1 won-lost record.
