Recently, the college basketball community tragically lost one of our own. University of South Florida head men’s basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim passed away on October 24 at just 43 years old. Amir was a rising star in the basketball coaching ranks, and was beloved across the country by colleagues and players alike. His passing is a devastating loss for our sport.
The NABC intends to celebrate Amir’s legacy throughout the season, and as a start, we are encouraging all Division I programs to hold a brief moment of silence during their first upcoming regular-season home game. We believe a nationwide remembrance during the season’s opening week will display a powerful message of solidarity and support for Amir’s loved ones.
Below you will find a sample public address script that can be read during the moment of silence, as well as a link to an on-screen graphic that can be displayed on video boards. Coaches are encouraged to share these resources with the appropriate gameday experience and operations staff.
Thank you for joining the NABC as we remember the life of Amir Abdur-Rahim.
