NABC Statement on Transfer Waivers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – NABC Executive Director Jim Haney released the following statement in response to Tuesday’s announcement from the NCAA Division I Transfer Waiver Working Group.

“Yesterday’s announcement from the NCAA Division I Transfer Waiver Working Group was a step towards reform to the waiver process. Men’s basketball coaches have long held concerns about the potential academic and competitive repercussions of de facto ‘free agency’ in college basketball – particularly with regards to APR penalties and lowering of Graduation Success Rates, which are now at an all-time high. Nonetheless, I agree with the Working Group that the current subjective nature of the transfer waiver model is unsustainable, and that a more uniform process is needed. This will continue to be an important topic of discussion for the NABC Board of Directors in the coming weeks.”
