KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A letter co-signed by a group of leading Division I head men’s basketball coaches and NABC Executive Director Craig Robinson was delivered on Wednesday to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, affirming support for select legislative reform concepts that align with provisions of the Protect College Sports Act of 2026.
The letter – authored by Arkansas head coach and past NABC Board of Directors president John Calipari, with support from over 20 additional leading voices in the sport – encouraged the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to continue prioritizing three specific elements which are addressed to varying degrees in the Protect College Sports Act: an age-based eligibility model, reasonable guardrails to transfer activity, and alignment with the academic mission of higher education.
“College sports provide life-changing competitive and educational opportunities for young people, and it is paramount that solutions be identified to ensure these opportunities remain accessible to future generations,” said Robinson. “Through the NABC, coaches are committed to offering first-hand perspective in support of those who share our urgency to stabilize college sports – including the members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.”
The letter – which opened by commending Committee Chairman Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) for their efforts to address current instability in college sports – did not take official positions on other notable elements of the Protect College Sports Act, including those that address broadcast rights and conference alignment.
