Statement from the NABC Committee on Racial Reconciliation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The NABC Committee on Racial Reconciliation has released the following statement:

“Nearly a year after the NABC Committee on Racial Reconciliation was formed in response to the murder of George Floyd, Tuesday’s verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial offers tangible hope that progress in addressing structural racism within law enforcement and the justice system is indeed being made. Still, this is just one step forward on an unending journey to champion the cause of equal justice under the law. That justice having been served in a Minneapolis courtroom was met with genuine surprise across America is evidence that much work remains to be done.”

“It is true that this guilty verdict brings felt relief to a nation bearing the weight of centuries of injustices. However, this fair ruling is not the basis for celebration – George Floyd’s life is still lost, and a former police officer who took an oath to serve and protect is headed to prison.”

“As coaches, we continue to bear a responsibility to use our influential platforms for good. Our Committee believes change begins with education – educating the young people in our locker rooms, educating our campus communities, and educating the watching public. Education has been at the core of our Committee’s efforts to-date, and will remain our steadfast commitment moving forward.”
